University Medical Center Utrecht, Netherlands
Dr. J.M. Beekman is full professor Cellular Disease Models at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, focussing of the development and application of patient-derived stem cell models for basic science studies, drug development and precision medicine applications. He pioneered translational research in the context of adult stem cell based intestinal organoids which led to a first demonstration that intestinal organoids from people with CF could guide individual treatment selection and prediction of risk of individual disease progression, contexts of uses that are supported by regulatory authorities as EMA. One current focus is to further professionalize adult stem cell based models from intestine and airway to enable larger scale, standardized drug and patient selection applications for several genetic and infectious diseases.
