We study mechanisms of establishment, regulation and differentiation of early mammalian lineages in vivo and in vitro using embryos, genetic mutants, chimaeras, live imaging, ESCs and single cell technologies to investigate acquisition of cell identity. We are currently focussing on human preimplantation/periimplantation development using donated left over IVF embryos. We have derived multiple clonal naive pluripotent stem cell lines as a resource for the research community to investigate mechanisms of cellular plasticity, inter- and intra-embryonic differentiation, cell competition and modelling human gastrulation.
