Miguel received a BSc and an MSc in Biology from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. He completed his PhD in 2002 at Harvard University, co-advised by Doug Melton and Andy McMahon. In 2003 he moved to the University of California, San Francisco, where he was a Sandler Fellow and then Assistant and Associate Professor. Since 2018 he holds the Canada 150 Research Chair in Developmental Epigenetics, is Senior Investigator at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and Full Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics, University of Toronto.
The Santos lab is interested in the mechanisms that regulate mammalian development and how they are modulated by environmental inputs. Topics of interest include stem cell hypertranscription, diapause, developmental roles of transposons and intergenerational epigenetic impact of environmental perturbations.
