KU Leuven, Belgium
Hugo Vankelecom obtained his PhD at KU Leuven (Belgium) where he became Professor following a postdoc at the University of Oxford (UK).
His group aims at unraveling the role and regulation of stem cells in endocrine and reproductive tissue biology and pathology. They identified the stem cells in the pituitary master endocrine gland and discovered its regenerative capacity. His team developed strong expertise in organoid modelling, and was the first to establish organoids from the uterus’ endometrium, the pituitary and human tooth, in both health and disease. They advanced the endometrial organoid tool into an in vitro embryo transplantation model. Recently, Prof. Vankelecom founded the interdisciplinary ‘organoid@KUL’ network and platform to build a vibrant ecosystem of organoid/3D tissue modelling research at KU Leuven and beyond.
